The creation of a riparian buffer at key locations along with management plans and some other repairs were implemented in an effort to force the Mississippi River to maintain its current course. The continuation of this project has proven to be successful, validating the idea of a riparian corridor does work to control over bank scour and river cutoffs.

All navigation interests are advised that Kaskaskia River Lock and Dam located at the confluence of UMRS River Mile 117.5 has now RE-Opened. River stage at the lock and dam is now 379. The Chester gauge level is 33. 4 this morning and slowly falling (Approximately 6 feet above flood stage). Critical river level that requires lock closure is 380.5, when water begins entering miter gate machinery recesses.

The Mississippi River water levels are forecasted to continue slowly falling in the vicinity of the Chester IL river gauge based on current precipitation levels and river flows coming downstream.

All navigation interests can contact the Lock Operators 24 hours per day on Marine Radio band 14 or 618-284-7160 for further information on the lock operations during high river level conditions.

This is a two-dimensional numerical model study performed by the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research. This study looks at the impacts of some of our training structures located in the Mississippi River in the St. Louis Harbor area. The results indicate that these structures do not raise flood heights, and their influence on water surface elevations are no more than the effects experienced from the natural variability changes in the riverbed. Any specific questions may be addressed to Mr. Edward Brauer (314-865-6332) or Mr. Don Duncan (314-331-8809) of MVS.
